Yeah For Electricity!

As some of you may have heard, we had a pretty bad ice storm come through KY this past week. It started sleeting on Monday night, then we got some snow on top of that, and then it changed back to ice again Tuesday evening and we lost power early Wednesday morning. We stayed awake quite awhile listening to all the snapping and cracking of the trees all around us. It was quite a nerve-wracking experience not being sure if a tree or big branch would fall on the house. I looked outside about an hour after waking up and there was a huge fire just east of us a couple of streets over. We never did find out if it was a house, but it sure looked like it. That was rather scary too.

It's been an interesting few days trying to keep the house warm, Sadie warm and cook supper before it got dark outside. Our neighbors were so gracious in allowing us to plug an extension cord into their generator so we were able to keep the frig from de-thawing, have hot water for showers and keep the oven running for heat. God has been so good to us through this whole mess in providing everything we needed. No trees fell on our house and we didn't have any other damage to our power lines coming to the house.

Since our neighbor's stove didn't work, I cooked supper for all of us the last couple of nights and we took it over there to eat, because they have a wood stove to heat their house and enough light that Sadie could play for awhile after supper before going to bed. It's times like these that remind us of how much we need one another. Our world is so self-focused sometimes, but when hard times come, you either rely on each other or you suffer worse. It has been so encouraging to me to see neighbors around us helping each other out.

Some good always comes from these things. For example, I finally finished a book I've been trying to read for the past year. What else do you do without electricity? :) Sadie didn't get out of her jammies for 2 days. In order to keep her warm I had her in her onesie and socks. Over that she wore her long underwear and then her blanket sleeper. She couldn't have been dressed any warmer and she didn't seem to notice that we didn't have electricity. She was a trouper and found the cords lying all around quite interesting and fun. It certainly adds an element of stress in these situations when there's a baby to keep warm.

We were only without power for 2 days and it came back on last night. We are SO THANKFUL to have it back on and we feel for the thousands of people throughout our area and state that are still without. They are predicting that some people may be without power for a week or more still. Here are some photos of the damage in our backyard and street. I haven't been out of the house since it happened, but I'm told it's far worse in other areas around us.
